Teresa Cheung Tak-lan, born Cheung Yuen-yuen, was a child prodigy in the show business of Hong Kong. She was loved for her sweet, round face and her talent as a performing artist through imitation and showmanship at a young age. She joined a song and dance troupe when she was small, and appeared in many films. At ten, she joined HKTVB and was one of the girls’ group, the ‘Four Golden Flowers’, together with Lydia Shum, Liza Wang and Felicia Wong. With them, she performed singing and dance on the hugely popular show, Enjoy Yourself Tonight, and made a TV series featuring the four. It was during this period that Cheung took formal singing lessons with Ms Hui Pui. At eighteen, she sang the original sound track (OST) for the drama series, Luk Siu Fung, all three of which became household favourites. It was at that time that she changed her stage name from ‘Cheung Yuen-yuen’ to ‘Cheung Tak-lan’, a sinicised form of her Catholic Holy name, ‘Teresa’.
Cheung later recorded the theme songs of many radio plays for RTHK and many drama series for HKTVB and RTV. She has cut over twenty solo albums which were released in Hong Kong and the Mainland. She also won numerous records over the years. In 1998, she was invited to appear in the joint concert given by Joseph Koo and James Wong. Her two MandoPop singles were released in 2004. In 2012, she gave a tribute concert to Joseph Koo, to give rise to a huge popular response and oversubscription. That concert featured mainly works written by Koo, and Cheung’s rendition of them confirmed her talent and vocal techniques. There were also a few songs sung a cappella, and one sung with an impressive show of her dancing talents. The applause almost brought the house down, and she had to sing three encores before the audience called it a day. In 2013, Cheung was invited to give a solo concert at the Sydney Town Hall, a famous landmark with a history of over a century which was only made open to commercial performances in 2010, with the first artist being Lady Gaga.
