Currently a percussionist with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Gao Shan trained in Percussion under Professors Jiao Shanlin and Wang Yidong at the China Conservatory. In 2005, he won a Silver Award for Small Chinese Instrumental Ensemble at the 2nd Ethnic Instrumental Music Competition which was part of the Wenhua Arts Institutional Prize of the Chinese Government Awards for Culture and the Arts, and the Most Outstanding Talent Award at the 4th joint competition organized by China’s Central Television and Taiwan’s Chung T’ien Television. In 2007, he won a Silver Prize for Youth Ensemble at the 1st Beijing Junior Percussion Competition, and went with the Huaxia Chinese Orchestra to perform at the Goldenersaal of the Musikverein in Vienna.
He was a soloist in the HKCO concert series, ‘Rising Artists of HKCO’, in December 2008, performing Copper Idiophones Over the Drums and Two Mexican Dances. It was followed by the percussion trio Drama at the ‘Music About China 3 – Guo Wenjing’s World of Chinese Music’ concert the following year. In 2010, he participated in a performance at the International Percussion Festival held at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, was the featured percussion soloist at the ‘HKCO4U - Gao Shan & Liu Hai’ concert, and played western musical instrument solo in the 1st, 2nd and 4th Movements of The Age of the Dragon in the ‘Majestic Drums’ concert.
