Liu Ying

Liu Ying is a famous suona virtuoso and a top level faculty member at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, a member of its Academic Committee, professor and supervisor of its Master’s degree programme, Chairman of its Trade Union, and principal of the middle school affiliated to the Conservatory. He is also a member of the Chinese Musicians’ Association, Vice President of the China Suona Professional Committee, and a director of the Shanghai Musicians’ Association.


In 1989, Liu won an Outstanding Performance Award at the 14th ‘Shanghai Spring’ International Music Festival with his premiere of the suona concerto by Zhu Jian’er, Ecstasy of Nature. He reprised the performance at the 2nd China Arts Festival and went on to win an Outstanding Achievement Award. In 1991, he premiered the Chinese orchestral version at the Hong Kong Arts Festival with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, again under the baton of Chen Xieyang, and garnered critical acclaim as “the youngest suona master from China” in Hong Kong.

Liu has toured the US, France, the UK, Italy, Japan and Germany, and was frequently invited to be on the panel of judges for major competitions in China.
